Not every lifter needs a rigid deload every fourth week. Some benefit from planned reductions; others can use performance and fatigue signals. Warning signs can include sustained performance decline, unusually high effort at normal loads, persistent soreness, or multiple sessions in which expected work cannot be completed.

A deload is not a punishment or lost week. Its purpose is to make subsequent productive training possible.
